Launch of New Chances Blog

“Your story could be the key that unlocks someone else’s prison. Don’t be afraid to share it!”

What is an Unwanted Vacation? We all want to be on vacation, we all look forward to going on vacation. Vacations temporarily free us from life’s everyday burdens, how can there be an unwanted vacation, everyone yearns for more time off.

There are currently over 2 million men, women, and youth incarcerated across America today; these citizens are on an unwanted vacation. They are away from their families, children, friends, jobs, homes, and communities, but not by choice. They may be free from everyday struggles of life; no children to tend to, families to care for, no rent to pay, free from a job’s daily grind, free from traffic, free from chores and errands. They may not have to worry about where they will lay their head at night, or when they will get their next meal, but it comes at a large cost. The cost of their freedom, the cost of their families and friends, their homes, their jobs.

Welcome to the Unwanted Vacation, we hope you join us on the journey to help millions of Americans who have been affected by incarceration in one form or another, and to raise awareness to create change.

Who are we and why do we do what we do? We are a small non-profit organization based out of San Diego, CA called New Chances. We serve our local communities youth, women, and their children who have been affected by incarceration; providing services before, during, and after incarceration. Our team is passionate about building better and brighter futures, breaking the cycle of incarceration and supporting self sufficiency for long term success. To find out more visit our website at

We encourage and promote others to share their story, “One bad chapter does not mean your story is over. Don’t be ashamed of your story, it will inspire others!”
